Booking a Korean traditional-liquor making class
Confirm whether the session is a brewery tour, tasting, same-day mixing class or multi-stage fermentation course, check the operator's age and ID rule before paying, disclose grain and food allergies, record every sanitation and fermentation instruction, and take a jar or bottle only after checking storage, accommodation, carrier and destination-customs rules.

Check the exact date, start and end time, minimum group, instruction language, accessibility, cancellation, late-arrival rule and whether the venue is reachable without a car. Save the operator's current confirmation.
Watch out An official tourism article can show that a program has existed without proving today's schedule, price or foreign-language session.
3Check age, ID and tasting separatelyAsk the operator for the current minimum age, acceptable ID, guardian rule and whether tasting is optional or excluded for some participants.
Ask the operator for the current minimum age, acceptable ID, guardian rule and whether tasting is optional or excluded for some participants. Do not book a child or teenager into an alcohol program because a general cultural workshop is open to families.

Ask for the exact rice, nuruk starter, wheat or other grains, fruit, herbs, sweeteners, dairy, nuts and paired-food ingredients, plus shared tools and surfaces. Skip tasting when the operator cannot answer a serious allergy or medication concern.

Wash and dry hands as instructed, use only the assigned sanitized vessel and utensils, keep phones and personal bottles away, and record ingredient amounts, water, temperature, mixing and sealing steps. Never add an unapproved ingredient or reuse a tasting utensil in the batch.

Confirm whether the operator keeps, filters and bottles the batch or whether you carry an active ferment. If it leaves with you, obtain written instructions for lid position, gas release, temperature, refrigeration, filtering, disposal and warning signs; do not improvise with a fully sealed container.
Watch out An actively fermenting container can build pressure, leak or spoil when handled contrary to the operator's directions.

Ask the accommodation before storing a fermenting food or drink, keep it upright in secondary leak protection and never consume it when appearance, smell, pressure or storage departed from the written instructions. Check the carrier and destination country's alcohol, liquid, food and customs rules before packing it.

Brewery tour and guided tasting
Learning regional styles without caring for an active ferment.

Age, sample size, food, language and transport home remain venue-specific.
One-day makgeolli mixing class
Hands-on rice and nuruk preparation with clear aftercare instructions.
Current class and material fee · Class plus possible fermentation at home
Confirm whether the vessel contains active ferment and exactly who filters, bottles or disposes of it.
Multi-session or take-home kit
Travelers with stable accommodation and enough time to complete the process.
Current course, kit and delivery total · Several days or sessions
A short hotel stay, onward flight or destination restriction may make the handoff impractical.
AVOID THESE MISTAKES
5 mistakes worth remembering.
Treating every traditional-liquor listing as a hands-on class.
Do this instead Confirm whether it is a tour, tasting, mixing session, kit or full fermentation course.
Assuming rice-based alcohol is automatically gluten-free.
Do this instead Ask what the nuruk starter and every additive contain and how shared equipment is handled.
Sealing an active ferment tightly without instructions.
Do this instead Use only the provided vessel and follow the operator's written pressure and storage method.
Packing the class bottle because it fits in a suitcase.
Do this instead Check fermentation state, leak protection, carrier policy and destination import rules first.
Driving or cycling after a cultural tasting.
Do this instead Plan public transport or a sober driver before the session and treat samples as alcohol.
TRAVELER FAQ
Answers before you leave.
Is every traditional-liquor class a makgeolli class?
No. Programs can cover makgeolli, yakju, distilled liquor, regional ingredients, tasting or brewery history. Read the exact recipe and activity before booking.
Can children join?
Only when the exact operator says so and explains the guardian and no-tasting format. Some alcohol-experience listings require participants to be 19 or older, while other cultural activities at the same venue may use a different age rule.
Is makgeolli gluten-free?
Do not infer that from rice alone. Nuruk and other ingredients can include wheat or other grains, and shared equipment matters. Ask the operator about the exact batch.
Will I take finished alcohol home the same day?
Not necessarily. You may receive a sample, kit, unfinished ferment or nothing to carry. Confirm who completes fermentation, filtering and bottling and what can safely leave the venue.
Can I take homemade makgeolli on a plane?
Do not assume so. Check whether it is still fermenting, the airline's liquid and baggage rules, and the destination country's alcohol and food-import rules. A class container is not customs approval.
What should I do if the bottle swells or leaks?
Move it away from people and valuables without opening it near your face, then follow the operator's written pressure and disposal instructions or contact them. Do not taste a batch handled outside its storage directions.
