ILLUSTRATED GUIDE
Read the pictures for the route. Read the text for the numbers.
- The won and globe symbols show a conscious currency choice, not a live exchange rate, fee comparison or claim that one option is universally cheapest.
- The cards, terminals, receipt, phone screen and ATM are generic editorial shapes; they do not promise network acceptance, approval, reversal, refund or cash availability.
- The abstract cash and transit-card panels contain no real denomination or product terms and cannot establish current purchase, reload, coverage, fee or refund rules.
STEP BY STEP
What you actually do, in order.
- 01
Match the written price to the exact purchase
Before handing over a card, match the item, quantity, tax or service inclusion and total shown in Korean won. For a restaurant, market stall, ticket, deposit or machine, ask for the complete amount before the transaction begins.
A photo, menu from another branch or old social post does not establish today's total. Do not let an unfamiliar symbol or comma placement replace a written amount you understand.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 02
Confirm the payment method when you have only one option
Ask whether the exact counter, kiosk, taxi, stall or booking channel accepts your foreign card before a non-refundable service starts. Keep a second card stored separately and a modest Korean-won reserve for a genuine failure.
A card logo on the door does not guarantee every foreign-issued card, contactless wallet, unattended terminal or offline transaction. Never expose a full card number in a public post.

- 03
Make the KRW or home-currency choice yourself
If a terminal or ATM offers Dynamic Currency Conversion, read both currency amounts, the disclosed exchange rate and any markup before choosing. Compare that offer with your own card issuer's foreign-transaction and conversion terms; you may decline the conversion and continue in local KRW where offered.
Look for KRW ·
The illustration's won and globe icons do not show a live rate or prove that one choice is universally cheapest. Do not accept a currency conversion that was selected without your informed choice.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 04
Submit one payment and wait for the terminal result
Tap, insert or swipe only as the terminal directs, shield the PIN and keep the card in your hand when possible. Wait for an approval, decline or staff confirmation before changing method.
Repeated taps can create uncertainty or duplicate pending transactions. Do not let a stranger handle the card out of sight or enter a PIN for you.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 05
Match the receipt and bank record before leaving
Check the amount, currency and merchant on the receipt or terminal, then compare the issuer notification when available. Keep the receipt, booking record or taxi trip history until the charge and any refund are settled.
A successful-looking screen is not enough when the merchant says payment failed, and a pending bank notification is not always a settled charge. Ask staff to check the terminal record.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 06
Stop and investigate an uncertain decline
Ask whether the first attempt was approved, declined or voided, and check your issuer's official app or support channel. Only then try a separately stored backup card or agreed cash payment and keep both attempt records.
Do not keep retrying the same card, share a verification code with staff or assume every pending line will disappear. Contact the issuer through the number on the card or official app.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 07
Treat cash withdrawal as its own transaction
Use a machine at a bank or another trusted, visible location that shows a compatible international network. Read the operator fee, withdrawal amount and any currency-conversion choice, shield the PIN and collect card, cash and receipt before walking away.
Look for Global ATM · 해외카드 · 출금 · 수수료 · KRW
An English menu or globe icon does not guarantee that your exact card will work. Decline unsolicited help, never reveal the PIN and use your issuer's official route if the machine retains the card.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 08
Keep transit-card payment rules separate
Buying or reloading T-money, EZL, a Climate Card or a single-journey ticket follows the exact product, machine and region. Check the current accepted payment method, card cost, load amount, coverage and refund route before committing cash or a foreign card.
Seoul's newer machines can accept international cards for specific products, but that does not make every T-money reload, convenience-store counter or regional transit system cashless.
