EATING OUT · RESTAURANT ETIQUETTE

ILLUSTRATED GUIDE
Read the pictures for the route. Read the text for the numbers.
- The poster says most places provide self-service water. That is too broad: water, utensils, side dishes and cleanup can be self-service or staff-service by venue.
- The poster says it is polite to finish your food. Avoiding waste is considerate, but nobody should finish unsafe food, violate a dietary boundary or eat beyond comfort.
- The illustrated menu, dishes, prices and phrase '계산 부탁드려요' are examples, not proof of a current restaurant's menu, included side dishes, service model or payment location.
STEP BY STEP
What you actually do, in order.
- 01
Read the entrance before joining the queue
Check the menu, price unit, minimum order, group-size rule, waiting list and whether the restaurant uses a kiosk, counter or table service. If any of those decide whether you can eat there, ask before sitting.
A food photo does not prove the portion, included side dishes, ingredients or final price. Use the written menu and the restaurant's current instructions.

- 02
Wait to be seated, or follow the self-seat sign
Some restaurants assign tables, while others expect you to choose an open seat or order first. Pause at the entrance, make eye contact with staff and follow the queue screen, table number or 안내 / Information sign.
There is no one Korean seating rule. Taking a reserved table or blocking a narrow aisle causes more friction than simply waiting for a cue.

- 03
State allergies and dietary needs before ordering
Show a specific Korean safety card and ask about broth, sauce, kimchi, side dishes and shared oil or equipment. Give staff time to check; if they cannot confirm what matters, choose another meal.
Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and allergy-safe are different claims. A removed topping cannot undo stock, sauce or cross-contact, and a severe reaction requires 119.

- 04
Confirm the exact item, quantity and service choice
Point to the written item and confirm quantity, portion unit, spice option, dine-in or takeaway, and any extra charge before submitting the order. On a kiosk, review the final basket and payment screen rather than relying on the menu photo.
Shared dishes can have a minimum quantity and set menus can include paid additions. Ask one short question instead of assuming every pictured item is included.

- 06
Use self-service areas only as marked
Water, utensils, side dishes, tissues and tray return may be at a 셀프 / Self-service station—or they may come from staff. Follow the labels, take only what you need and keep clean utensils separate from used dishes.
Do not carry dishes to an unmarked counter or leave a table-service restaurant without checking. The correct cleanup action changes with the service model.

- 07
Pay where the restaurant tells you
Payment may happen at the kiosk before food, at a front counter after eating, or occasionally at the table. Bring the table number or order slip when shown, check the amount and keep the receipt until any card issue is resolved.
Do not assume every venue accepts a foreign card, cash, split payment or mobile wallet. Confirm the method before ordering when you have only one usable option.
This step has not been illustrated yet.
- 08
Leave the table according to the service model
Return trays only where a marked station exists; otherwise leave tableware for staff. Take your belongings, make room for the next party and use 감사합니다 / Thank you as a simple closing.
You do not need to force yourself to finish unsafe or unwanted food. Avoiding waste is considerate, but health and a confirmed dietary boundary come first.
