Ten Korean desserts — pick two or three, not all ten

THE KOREAN DESSERT PASSPORT

10 desserts, each with a reason.

These are ten dessert families, not a ranking or one sugar-heavy route. Choose two or three by texture, season, appetite and the neighborhood already in your trip.
01

SYRUP-GLAZED HANGWA · 조청과 기름

Choose firm spice or a softer chewy bite

Both can look glossy, but their dough, texture and handling differ. Order one or share a small plate before adding ice cream or a modern topping.
  1. 01

    Yakgwa

    약과

A molded wheat-flour confection is fried and soaked in honey or grain syrup, often with sesame oil, ginger or cinnamon notes. Compare a plain piece before buying a large gift box and read the actual packaged label when taking it home.

One piece, small plate or sealed pack · current seller totalCommon concerns include wheat, sesame, honey or grain syrup, oil, nuts and shared frying; a traditional label is not vegan, gluten-free or allergy-safe proof
  2. 02

    Gaeseong juak

    개성주악

This small fried rice-based sweet is glazed with syrup and commonly finished with jujube or another garnish. KTO's 2026 feature describes its chewy character; current cafes may add fruit, cream or ice cream, so identify the exact version before ordering.

One piece or current set · toppings can change the totalGlutinous rice, wheat or flour blends, oil, honey or syrup, jujube, nuts, dairy, egg and shared frying all require a product-specific check
02

CHEWY TTEOK · 쫀득한 떡

Choose powder-coated or filled

Rice cake can be dense and sticky. Take small bites, chew fully and use the maker's same-day or storage instruction instead of treating every tteok as a shelf-stable souvenir.
  1. 01

    Injeolmi

    인절미

Bite-size glutinous rice cake is commonly coated in roasted soybean powder, creating a nutty aroma and a dry outer layer over a very chewy center. Fresh pieces can harden with time, so buy a portion that fits the day.

Small fresh portion · check weight, count and use-by guidanceSoy is typical; sesame, peanut or tree-nut powders, wheat, dairy and shared milling or handling are possible, and the sticky texture needs careful small bites
  2. 02

    Kkultteok

    꿀떡

Small colorful rice cakes hold honey, grain syrup or sugar filling. The name does not prove pure honey, and natural-looking colors do not reveal the flavor, dye, filling or allergens; ask what this batch contains.

Count- or weight-based pack · confirm the complete current amountRice, honey or syrup, sugar, sesame, soy, nuts, coloring and shared tools can vary; the sticky filling and chewy skin need small bites
03

COLD + AFTER-MEAL · 차갑고 가벼운 마무리

Choose a shared ice bowl or a small sweet drink

Patbingsu is often seasonal and share-sized; sikhye can be a smaller after-meal option. Neither name fixes the portion, temperature, sugar or recipe.
  1. 01

    Patbingsu

    팥빙수

Fine or coarse shaved ice is topped with sweet red bean and may include rice cake, condensed milk, fruit, cereal, nuts or ice cream. Ask the real serving size and whether components can be separated before ordering for one person.

One bowl · check solo versus share size and every add-onMilk, condensed milk, soy, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, rice cake, fruit and shared scoops can appear; it melts quickly and is not a takeaway for a long warm journey
  2. 02

    Sikhye

    식혜

A chilled sweet rice punch is made with malt and usually contains visible rice grains. It can be a compact finish after a meal, but sweetness, garnish, homemade storage and packaged ingredients differ by seller.

One cup, restaurant serving or sealed bottleBarley malt can be relevant to gluten-sensitive travelers; sugar, rice, pine nuts, ginger or other garnish and shared handling vary, so a traditional drink is not automatically suitable
04

WARM STREET SWEETS · 따뜻한 길거리 간식

Choose molten syrup or a filled fish shape

Both are strongest in colder weather and moving stalls can disappear. Search the Korean name near the route already in use and let the filling cool before the first bite.
  1. 01

    Hotteok

    호떡

A pan-fried dough pocket commonly holds brown sugar, cinnamon and seeds or nuts that turn into very hot syrup. Keep it upright, open cautiously and distinguish a sweet version from vegetable, cheese or regional seed styles.

One piece · filling and city style change the current priceWheat, sugar, cinnamon, sesame, sunflower seed, peanuts or tree nuts and shared oil are common concerns; the interior can cause a burn
  2. 02

    Bungeoppang

    붕어빵

Fish-shaped batter is usually filled with sweet red bean or custard, not fish. Ask which filling is in which shape because mixed molds can look alike, buy a small count and eat it while the shell is crisp.

Often count-based · repeat the filling and totalWheat, egg, dairy and soy are common; custard and red-bean batches can share the same mold, tools and storage, and the filling stays hot
05

TEA-TABLE SWEETS · 차와 함께

Choose airy crunch or a small pressed cookie

Hangwa is a family, not one recipe. A gift assortment can combine multiple bases, coatings and garnishes, so read each compartment instead of trusting one front label.
  1. 01

    Yugwa

    유과

Glutinous rice dough is processed, dried and fried so it expands, then coated with syrup and rice puffs or seeds. The light-looking piece can still be fried and sweet; compare a small serving before choosing a large ceremonial box.

Piece, tray or gift set · check net weight and packagingGlutinous rice, alcohol used in some traditional processes, oil, grain syrup, sesame, soy, nuts and shared production can vary; ask about the exact maker
  2. 02

    Dasik

    다식

Fine powders such as roasted grain, sesame, soybean, chestnut or tea are mixed with honey or syrup and pressed into small patterned molds. Color and shape are decorative clues, not an ingredient list.

Small tea plate or assorted box · identify every flavorSesame, soy, wheat or grain, chestnut and other nuts, honey, pollen-related ingredients and shared molds are possible; tea-colored pieces may contain caffeine

COST CONTROL

Know what changes the total.

Use these as planning envelopes, then confirm live tickets, transport and accommodation before paying.
01

Taste

Two or three choices

Pick different textures across the trip instead of buying ten full portions in one day.

02

Share

One real serving size

Check whether bingsu, a cafe plate or a gift assortment is intended for one person or a group.

03

Ingredients

One exact answer

Ask about the actual batch, filling, coating, garnish and shared equipment rather than the generic food name.

04

Storage

One safe window

Use the maker's temperature, use-by and packaging directions; fresh tteok and melted ice are not travel-proof gifts.

05

Footprint

One dated tasting note

Record the exact item, seller, portion, texture, total and ingredient answer without turning taste into a permanent ranking.

EDITOR’S NOTES

The choices that make this edit work.

PICK 2 OR 3

Build contrast, not a food race

Try one chewy, one crisp or glazed and one seasonal choice across the trip. Ten cards teach recognition; they do not demand ten orders.

Leave appetite for a return visit
NAMES ARE FAMILIES

The exact batch wins

Yakgwa, tteok, bingsu, hotteok and hangwa change by maker, filling, coating and season. Read the product or ask the seller before paying.

Never infer a recipe from appearance
TEXTURE + TEMPERATURE

Chew small and let hot fillings cool

Sticky rice cake needs careful small bites; hotteok and bungeoppang fillings can stay hotter than the shell; bingsu melts and should be shared promptly.

Eat for the food in front of you
GIFT TEST

Pretty does not mean travel-safe

Check seal, use-by date, storage temperature, oil, fragile coating and destination import rules before carrying sweets away from the day they were made.

BEFORE YOU GO

What can still change

  • This is not an objective top ten, nutrition ranking or ten-item challenge. It is a recognition card for ten dessert families; choose two or three that fit appetite, season, texture and the route already booked.
  • KTO's March 2026 dessert feature is a current discovery source, not proof that a featured shop, trend, queue, price or sold-out item still works on the visit date. Search the exact Korean name and current seller notice.
  • Recipe names do not create universal ingredients. Ask about wheat, barley malt, glutinous rice, soy, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, egg, honey, gelatin, fruit, caffeine, alcohol-derived processing ingredients, shared oil, molds and tools for the exact item.
  • Traditional-looking, rice-based or plant-colored does not mean vegan, halal, gluten-free, nut-free, low-sugar or allergy-safe. A seller's exact ingredient and cross-contact answer overrides an assumption.
  • Rice cake is dense, sticky and perishable. Take small bites, chew fully and supervise children or anyone with swallowing difficulty; follow the maker's same-day, refrigeration, freezing and reheating instructions.
  • Hotteok syrup, bungeoppang filling and fresh fried sweets can remain much hotter than the surface. Let the first bite cool, keep syrup upright and do not hand a sealed hot filling to a child without checking it.
  • Patbingsu can be seasonal, large and fast-melting. Confirm the real share size, milk base, topping list and whether omissions are possible before ordering; do not carry a melting bowl through a long route.
  • Hotteok and bungeoppang carts are seasonal and mobile. Search near the district already in the itinerary instead of traveling to an old pin or blocking a queue for filming.
  • Sikhye is a sweet rice beverage, not plain water. Homemade, restaurant and packaged versions differ in malt, sugar, garnish, refrigeration and use-by conditions.
  • For a gift, read the sealed label, net weight, storage temperature, use-by date, individual wrapping and destination-country import rules. A sturdy yakgwa pack and a fresh tteok tray do not travel the same way.
  • Ask before filming a stall, cafe, staff or guests. Keep faces, children, receipts, payment screens and order numbers private; never open or handle display food for a shot.
  • Generated campaign illustrations are generic and do not certify a named product, portion, recipe, ingredient, preparation, dietary status, seller or current availability.
  • Leave a footprint only after a firsthand taste and state the date, exact item and seller. Use 1330 for multilingual non-emergency travel help, 112 for police and 119 for fire or medical emergencies; current staff and authorities override this saved page.
