THE FOOD EDIT

8 foods, each with a reason.

The groups help you choose. They are not a challenge to eat every dish or cross the city in order.
01

DISPLACED-COMMUNITY TABLE · CHOOSE 1–2

Foods that travelled south with Hamgyeong-do families

Abai Village is a living community shaped by Korean War displacement. Eat with that history in mind, then choose by ingredients rather than treating all three dishes as one generic 'North Korean food' set.
  1. 01

    Abai sundae

    아바이순대

A large, hearty sausage associated with Hamgyeong-do families, traditionally using pork large intestine with blood, glutinous rice and vegetables.

Confirm plate size, whether it is a set and the final priceContains pork and commonly blood; rice, vegetables, seasoning and shared-steamer cross-contact vary
  2. 02

    Ojingeo sundae

    오징어순대

A whole squid body filled, cooked and sliced into rounds gives the village table a distinct mollusc-based counterpart to pork sundae.

Ask whether it is sold alone, fried with egg or bundled with Abai sundaeSquid is a mollusc; fillings can include vegetables, noodles, egg, wheat, meat or seafood seasoning
  3. 03

    Hamheung naengmyeon

    함흥냉면

Thin, chewy cold noodles with a spicy seasoned pollock topping connect Sokcho's dining culture to people displaced from Hamheung.

Confirm whether fish topping, broth and extras are includedCan contain fish, meat broth, soy, wheat, sesame and significant chilli; noodle starch and recipe vary
02

EAST SEA · CHOOSE ONE MEAL

Raw, grilled, stewed or steamed — not one seafood category

Availability, species, weight and price change. Choose the cooking method that fits the diner and ask for the exact seafood, portion and total before ordering.
  1. 01

    Mulhoe

    물회

Raw fish and crisp vegetables in a cold spicy broth make a refreshing Sokcho harbour meal, especially in warm weather.

Ask today's fish, serving size and whether noodles or rice cost extraRaw fish risk; sauce or stock may contain additional fish, shellfish, soy, wheat, sesame and chilli
  2. 02

    Mixed grilled fish

    생선구이

A shared platter highlights several seasonal fish and the grilled-fish area that grew around Abai Village and the gaetbae crossing.

Confirm which fish, number of diners and whether rice is includedFish bones remain; shared grills, sauces and side dishes can add soy, wheat, shellfish or other fish
  3. 03

    Gomchi soup

    곰치국 · 물곰탕

Soft-fleshed fish cooked with sour kimchi and red seasoning is a warming coastal soup whose supply and name can vary by shop.

Ask whether it is available today and whether rice is includedContains fish; broth, kimchi and seasoning can include seafood, soy, wheat and strong chilli
  4. 04

    Red snow crab

    붉은대게 · 홍게

Sokcho promotes red snow crab as a local specialty tied to its port and seafood industry, best ordered only after the weight and total are clear.

Confirm species, live or cooked weight, unit price, preparation charge and final totalCrustacean shellfish; high cross-contact risk and not suitable for shellfish-allergic diners
03

TOURIST MARKET · CHOOSE ONE SHARE BOX

The famous snack is one option, not the whole food city

The market has many independent chicken shops and food alleys. Compare the displayed menu, portion and queue, then buy a shareable amount only when it fits the day.
  1. 01

    Dakgangjeong

    닭강정

Bite-size fried chicken coated in a glossy sweet-spicy sauce is Sokcho Tourist and Fishery Market's most portable signature snack.

Confirm box size, bone-in or boneless, heat level and displayed totalChicken with likely wheat and soy; recipes can include egg, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame or shared-fryer cross-contact

EDITOR’S NOTES

The choices that make this edit work.

FIRST PAIR

One history dish + one sea dish

Choose Abai sundae, ojingeo sundae or Hamheung naengmyeon for the displacement story, then one cooked or raw seafood meal according to dietary risk.

Two meals explain more than eight bites
RAW VS COOKED

Cooking method is the first filter

Mulhoe is raw; grilled fish, gomchi soup and crab are cooked but still carry bones, shellfish or cross-contact risks. Pick the method before the restaurant.

Diner safety before a viral menu
PRICE RULE

Ask for the final total

For crab, raw fish and shared platters, repeat the species, weight or portion, preparation charge, included sides and total before agreeing.

A display is not a finished bill
MARKET RULE

No compulsory queue

Dakgangjeong recipes differ by shop. A shorter line with a clear menu can be the better travel choice; no business in this guide is sponsored.

BEFORE YOU GO

What can still change

  • These are eight alternatives, not an eat-all challenge or one-day food crawl. Choose two or three across the trip and keep each meal near the area you already planned.
  • The official Sokcho food page connects the city's table to sea, mountain and lake geography plus the foods of displaced residents. Use that context without reducing Abai Village to a filming set or every Hamgyeong-do recipe to one fixed modern version.
  • Abai sundae commonly contains pork large intestine, blood, glutinous rice and vegetables. It is not vegetarian, halal or blood-free unless a qualified kitchen explicitly confirms a different product and its preparation.
  • Ojingeo sundae uses squid, a mollusc. Fillings and finishing methods vary and may add egg, wheat, noodles, meat or other seafood; removing one visible ingredient does not remove shared preparation.
  • Hamheung naengmyeon in Sokcho is associated with chewy noodles and spicy seasoned pollock. Ask about fish, broth, wheat, soy, sesame and noodle starch rather than assuming every cold noodle bowl is vegetarian or gluten-free.
  • Mulhoe contains raw seafood. Pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised or otherwise high-risk diners should seek appropriate medical guidance and choose a thoroughly cooked alternative when raw food is unsuitable.
  • Mixed grilled fish and gomchi soup can contain bones even when the flesh is soft. Ask which species is served today and take extra care with children or anyone who has difficulty detecting bones.
  • For red snow crab, confirm the exact species, whether price is by live or cooked weight, unit price, preparation charge, sides and final total before ordering. A campaign photograph is not evidence of today's size or price.
  • Dakgangjeong commonly involves wheat and soy and may include egg, peanuts, tree nuts or sesame. Shared fryers, tools and display cases make cross-contact possible even when a garnish is removed.
  • Official model-restaurant, good-price and safe-restaurant lists can help discovery but are not permanent endorsements, allergen guarantees or promises of today's menu, opening, price or queue. Verify the chosen business directly.
  • For a severe allergy or dietary restriction, show the written Korean request before ordering and leave if ingredients or cross-contact cannot be confirmed. Call 119 for a medical emergency and 1330 for multilingual travel support.
